Basically there are two types of access-lists
1) Standard
2) Extended
1) Standard Access-list:
Standard access-list start from range 1-99. It only provides basic filtering that depends on source IP address only.
In standard access-list we cannot create permission on specific protocols e.g block the telnet, icmp or ftp. Basically standard access-list are applied near to the destination and extened are used on protocols and groups.
2)Extended access-list:
Extended access-list starts from range 100-199, unlike standard access list it provides you more option for packet filtering.
It will not only support source address but also the destination address. Also it will support different protocols. You can specify the group of host from accessing a particular IP or server. Also you can allow or deny telnetting or icmp (pings) limiting to a specific host or group of hosts.
You can identidy each access list from its numeric range.
