Bandwidth Monitering
One of the most important thing in any organization is to manage and monitor the bandwidth in order to keep the network flow smooth and constant. Here i will explain you how to monitor usage of bandwidth.
SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol ) is used to monitor your data usage or bandwidth in your network. You can also monitor it from any remote location or within the same network.
You need to configure SNMP in your router or modem and set a community name. After that you need a software in which you can use the IP which you wants to monitor e.g your default gate of your modem or router and community name. You can set authentication with SNMP.
For Cisco:
In the globle configuration mode use the below command. Note p1is the community name and RO stands for (Read-only access with this community string)
snmp-server community p1 RO
For Thomson modems:
To configure in Thomson modem. You need to telnet it and configure the following commands. Here public is the community name.
:snmp community modify securityname=ROCommunity communityname=public
:service system modify name=SNMP_AGENT state=enabled
:saveall
One of the good and free software available is STG. You can download it from Network Tools
